E-waste is a significant problem involving hazardous materials and inadequate recycling rates, which pose risks to human health and the environment. The issue is compounded by short product lifecycles and a lack of proper management infrastructure, leading to toxic substances leaching into soil and water.
This is further compounded by lack of adequate infrastructure for e-waste that often ends up in landfills or is illegally exported to developing countries, where workers dismantle it in unsafe conditions to extract valuable metals. This practice, sometimes called "toxic colonialism," disproportionately affects poor communities, exposing them to hazardous substances like lead and mercury and other toxic substances.
