What is causing poor air quality in Bishkek?
Several major pollution sources contribute to Bishkek’s poor air quality, especially during colder months. The city’s basin-like geography also traps pollutants, allowing smog to accumulate over the urban area (2).
Primary sources of pollution include:
- Household coal burning for heating, responsible for about 40% of pollution
- Vehicle emissions from an aging fleet of cars
- Emissions from the coal-fired thermal power plant
- Wind-blown dust and small-scale industrial activity
Vehicle emissions are a particularly significant contributor. More than 600,000 vehicles operate in the Bishkek area, many of which are over 15 years old and lack modern emissions controls.
