Is the air quality good in Bishkek?

As of March 16, 2026, at 3:00 AM PT, air quality in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan is poor. The city is currently ranked as the most polluted major city in the world, with an AQI of 160, placing it in the unhealthy range.

Residents may experience health effects, especially vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions.

While the air quality conditions today are poor, it is important to keep in mind that the average PM2.5 concentration in 2024 for Bishkek was 21.2 µg/m3. This corresponds to an AQI of 70, which falls into the “moderate” category and was 4.2 times the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m3.

When will air quality improve in Bishkek?

Forecasts indicate that pollution levels may move from the unhealthy category into the moderate range by tomorrow.

This improvement may occur as weather conditions change, allowing pollutants trapped near the surface to disperse. However, temporary improvements are common, and pollution levels may fluctuate again depending on temperature, emissions, and atmospheric conditions.

In Central Asian cities like Bishkek, smog episodes often last several days during winter due to weak winds and atmospheric inversions that trap pollutants close to the ground (1).

Recent trends show that air quality had been mostly moderate over the last 30 days. However, since March 12, pollution levels have worsened significantly and moved into the unhealthy range.

The drop in air quality coincides with a decrease in temperatures beginning around March 12, which increased heating-related emissions and contributed to worsening pollution levels.

What is causing poor air quality in Bishkek?

Several major pollution sources contribute to Bishkek’s poor air quality, especially during colder months. The city’s basin-like geography also traps pollutants, allowing smog to accumulate over the urban area (2).

Primary sources of pollution include:

  • Household coal burning for heating, responsible for about 40% of pollution
  • Vehicle emissions from an aging fleet of cars
  • Emissions from the coal-fired thermal power plant
  • Wind-blown dust and small-scale industrial activity

Vehicle emissions are a particularly significant contributor. More than 600,000 vehicles operate in the Bishkek area, many of which are over 15 years old and lack modern emissions controls.

Seasonal weather conditions worsen the problem. During winter, temperature inversions form when warmer air sits above colder air near the surface, trapping pollution in the lower atmosphere and preventing it from dispersing.

Fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 is especially concerning. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Studies have shown that PM2.5 levels in Bishkek often exceed World Health Organization guidelines by several times, posing a significant long-term public health risk (3).
