April 3, 2026: Delhi among top 10 most polluted cities in the world

Is the air quality good in Delhi, India?

As of April 2, 2026, at 10:00 PM PT, Delhi, India, is experiencing extremely poor air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 500, placing conditions in the hazardous range. PM10 concentrations are 58 times higher than World Health Organization guidelines, resulting in thick dust blanketing the capital and drastically reducing visibility.

These conditions pose immediate and serious health risks to everyone, including respiratory distress, aggravated heart and lung problems, and reduced visibility that can affect daily activities and road safety.

Air quality conditions can change rapidly throughout the day. For a complete, real-time view of current pollution levels, see Delhi’s air quality map.

Although today’s conditions are exceptionally severe, long-term data highlights a persistent problem. In 2025, Delhi’s average PM2.5 concentration was the 4th highest globally, keeping annual air quality firmly in the unhealthy range and underscoring the city’s chronic exposure to fine particulate pollution.

When will the air quality improve in Delhi, India?

Short-term improvement depends largely on weather changes. Stronger winds or rainfall can temporarily disperse the heavy dust layer, but current conditions with low winds and possible inversions may keep pollution elevated for longer.

Temperature inversions and calm winds frequently trap emissions near the ground, allowing pollution to persist. As a result, air quality is expected to remain highly variable and elevated until more favorable meteorological conditions, such as sustained winds or rain, develop.

What is causing poor air quality in Delhi, India?

Delhi’s severe air pollution this episode is primarily driven by intense dust, with PM10 levels exceeding 800 µg/m³ dominating the hazardous AQI. Dust storms and resuspended road dust from dry conditions, construction, and regional sources are the main contributors, creating thick haze and drastically reducing visibility.

Vehicle emissions, industrial activity, coal-based power generation, and residential fuel burning add to the burden, but the current extreme spike is overwhelmingly due to coarse particulate dust rather than fine combustion particles.

How can I protect myself from poor air quality?
