Is the air quality good in Incheon?

On February 11, 2026, at 4:00 AM PT, air quality in Incheon, South Korea is unhealthy, with an Air Quality Index of 164.

The elevated pollution levels are driven by an influx of fine dust from outside Korea, compounded by stagnant winter weather conditions that allow pollutants to accumulate locally (1).

Air quality in this range may begin to affect both the general public and sensitive groups such as children, older adults, pregnant people, and individuals with heart or lung conditions. It is recommended to limit prolonged outdoor activities, consider wearing a mask when outside, and use indoor air purifiers.

Air quality is dynamic and, like the weather, can change frequently. Incheon ranked 6th among the most polluted major cities in the world on Wednesday morning (local time).

The affected region extended across north-west South Korea, impacting nearby cities such as SeoulSuwon, Sejong, Gunsan, Seosan, Cheongju, Daejeon, Gwangju and Cheonan.

While the air quality today is poor, it’s worth noting that the average PM2.5 concentration in 2024 for Incheon was 19.1 µg/m³, corresponding to an AQI of 65 (“moderate”), and was 3.8 times the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³.

When will air quality improve in Incheon?

Forecasts indicate that conditions will gradually improve by tomorrow evening. Winds are expected to strengthen and shift, helping disperse accumulated fine dust and improve visibility.

Over the past 30 days, air quality in Incheon has remained mostly in the moderate range, with today’s conditions marking a temporary spike into unhealthy levels, reflecting short-term pollution buildup rather than a sustained deterioration.

What is causing poor air quality in Incheon?

Regional and international studies consistently show that transboundary pollution from China plays a major role in influencing fine dust levels in South Korea. Research indicates that around 19 percent of Korea’s particulate matter is transported from outside its borders, and during certain months, up to 55 percent of its ultrafine dust can be traced back to emissions originating in China (2).

This impact is driven by westerly winds that carry pollutants from industrial regions in eastern China. Seasonal periods with stagnant atmospheric conditions allow these particles to remain over the Korean Peninsula, and domestic sources such as industrial operations and traffic emissions in Incheon further intensify local pollution levels (3).

Industrial activity within Incheon also shapes the chemical composition of its PM2.5. Recent studies have identified elevated concentrations of chromium (VI), manganese, and arsenic in the region’s particulate profile. These substances increase health risks and raise overall air quality index values, highlighting the combined influence of transboundary and local pollution on the area’s air quality (4).
