Is the air quality good in Kuwait?

On February 15, 2026, at 7:00 AM PT, Kuwait City, Kuwait, is experiencing very poor air quality due to dust and emissions. The AQI is 274, classified as "very unhealthy" with PM2.5 concentrations dominating.

These conditions may increase the risk of respiratory issues, worsen heart problems, and impair lung function, particularly for children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions.

To stay safe during this temporary spike, limit outdoor time, seal windows, wear masks if venturing out, and use air purifiers indoors.

Air quality conditions can change rapidly throughout the day. For a complete, real-time view of current pollution levels, see Kuwait's air quality map.

While the air quality conditions today are unusually poor, it is important to keep in mind that the average PM2.5 concentration in 2024 for Kuwait City was 30.2 µg/m³. This corresponds to an AQI of 88, which falls into the “moderate” category and was 6.4 times the WHO annual guideline.

When will air quality improve in Kuwait?

Air quality is forecasted to improve gradually by tomorrow. Conditions are expected to return to the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range as dust concentrations and atmospheric stagnation decrease.

Over the past 30 days, air quality ranged from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups, but today it has escalated into the very unhealthy category.

What is causing poor air quality in Kuwait?

The primary driver of the current spike is elevated PM2.5 concentrations. Research identifies several major contributing factors:

  • Dust storms, blowing dust, and dust haze events, which significantly increase PM2.5 and PM10 levels.
  • Industrial emissions from oil and gas facilities.
  • Vehicular emissions in densely populated and high-traffic areas.
  • Low wind speeds leading to air stagnation and pollutant accumulation.
