March 11, 2026: Milan among the top 10 most polluted cities in the world

Is the air quality good in Milan?

On March 11, 2026, at 7:00 AM Pacific Time (PT), Milan, Italy, is experiencing poor air quality caused by dust and local emissions sources. The AQI is 178, in the "unhealthy," range.

Like the weather, air quality conditions can quickly change due to wind, weather, and other factors. To see a complete, real-time view of current pollution levels, view Milan's air quality map.

Although air quality conditions today are poor, it is important to note that the average PM2.5 concentration in 2024 for Milan was 18.1 µg/m³. This corresponds to an AQI of 63, which falls into the moderate category and was 4 times the WHO annual guideline.

What is causing poor air quality in Milan?

Milan’s poor air quality is currently being driven by a combination of dust, local sources, and geography.

A plume of Saharan dust has lingered in Italy for much of the past week and has been slower to dissipate than in neighboring countries (1).

The city’s position in the Po Valley worsens air quality by trapping industrial emissions, traffic pollution, and agricultural runoff. While the temperatures are warming, these conditions can intensify during winter months due to stagnant air and temperature inversions (2).

How can I protect myself from poor air quality?
