Understanding the Moderate Air Quality Range
An Air Quality Index (AQI) score between 51-100 falls into the "Moderate" range. While the general public may not be at risk when air quality is in this range, members of unusually sensitive groups should exercise caution. Unusually sensitive groups include:
- Children
- The Elderly
- Pregnant People
- People with cardiac and pulmonary diseases
These unusually sensitive groups may begin to experience discomfort and be susceptible to health impacts when air quality is moderate and should greatly reduce outdoor exercise.

How can I protect myself when air quality is moderate?
- Get a free air quality app for real-time air quality alerts and forecasts and consistently monitor your air quality.
- Help increase the amount of ground-level monitors by becoming an air quality contributor. Contribute to your community’s outdoor air quality data.
- Shut doors and windows and set the HVAC to recirculate mode.
- Unusually sensitive groups stay indoors; if you do need to go outdoors, wear a KN95/FFP2 mask.
- Unusually sensitive groups should run an air purifier to filter pollutants, particles, gases, and other contaminants.
