What is the name and location of the wildfire?
As of September 23, 2025, the Syria Wildfires are burning across Latakia and Homs provinces in western Syria. Fires erupted between the villages of al-Rihaniyah and al-Sukariyah in the Rabia area of Latakia and spread near Salma.
Additional blazes have been reported in Jabal al-Turkman and Ain Ghazal in Latakia’s countryside, as well as in Habnamrah and Wadi al-Nasara in western Homs (1).
Rugged terrain, strong winds, and remnants of war have complicated firefighting operations, leaving crews struggling to contain the flames since September 21.

Which cities or areas are affected by the Syria Wildfires?
The wildfires are affecting multiple areas, including:
- Latakia countryside (Rabia, Jabal al-Turkman, Ain Ghazal)
- Salma, Latakia province
- Habnamrah village, western Homs
- Wadi al-Nasara, Homs province
Smoke has spread into Latakia city, prompting health warnings. Rural communities in Homs, including predominantly Christian villages in Wadi al-Nasara, have seen fires reach farmland, fields, and residential neighborhoods (2).
Several homes and agricultural lands have been threatened or damaged, while livestock losses are also reported.
What is the current containment status of the Syria Wildfires?
The wildfires remain active and only partially contained. Civil Defense officials reported progress in some areas but said strong winds and dry vegetation continue to fuel flames.
In Latakia’s Jabal al-Turkman, a major blaze is still spreading across forested land, while new fires in Ain Ghazal have covered four kilometers of terrain (3).
In Homs, flames reached homes in Habnamrah and Wadi al-Nasara, with containment efforts slowed by rugged terrain and limited equipment.
Are there any evacuation orders or alerts in place?
Evacuation alerts have been issued in parts of Latakia and Homs. Residents of Habnamrah and Wadi al-Nasara raised urgent calls for evacuation assistance as flames approached their homes and heavy smoke caused respiratory distress (4).
In Latakia, communities near Rabia and Jabal al-Turkman faced emergency warnings, with Civil Defense urging residents to remain indoors and prepare for possible evacuation. Firefighters have been injured during operations, and locals are being asked to assist with water trucks and equipment where possible.
