What is the name and location of the wildfire?

As of July 25, 2025, the Limassol Wildfire is burning in Cyprus’s Limassol district, specifically in the Troodos mountain range north of Limassol city (1). The fire, which began near the village of Malia, has scorched forested hillsides and vineyards, worsened by a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 44°C (111°F) and strong winds (2).

Which cities or areas are affected by the wildfire?

The wildfire has directly impacted the following areas:

  • Agios Therapontas
  • Alassa
  • Lofou
  • Malia
  • Omodos
  • Souni
  • Vasa Koilaniou
  • Vouni

Dozens of homes, particularly in Souni and Lofou, have been destroyed, with smoke affecting air quality across the region. The fire has also damaged agricultural land near the Kouris reservoir (3).

What is the current containment status of the wildfire?

As of July 25, 2025, the Limassol Wildfire remains largely uncontained, with flare-ups reported in Omodos, Pano Kyvides, Alassa, and Zanakia. Over 250 firefighters, supported by 18 aircraft from Cyprus, Jordan, Spain, and Israel, are battling the blaze, but strong winds and extreme heat continue to hinder efforts (4). The fire has scorched over 120 square kilometers.

Are there any evacuation orders or alerts in place?

Evacuation orders have been issued for at least 12 villages, including Malia, Souni, and Vasa Koilaniou, with over 100 people relocated to temporary shelters. An extreme heat alert is in place, with temperatures expected to reach 44°C, and authorities are urging residents to stay indoors to avoid smoke and heat exposure.
