For the past 30 years, IQAir has been a pioneer in establishing and exceeding true HEPA filtration in air purifiers. As is the only manufacturer who tests all of HyperHEPA filters to ensure they exceed the stated performance. While many other manufacturers use plastic and cardboard for its air purifier filters, IQAir has pioneered the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) for its high-performance pre-filters and HyperHEPA filters. IQAir focuses on precision engineering, airtight filtration, and user-friendly design. EPS supports these goals by:
- Providing a perfect seal with no bypass leakage;
- Allowing integration of advanced sealing and locking mechanisms; and
- Ensuring durability and performance consistency over the filter's lifetime.
The reasons for EPS:
- High performance - high precision ensures air tight design
- No impact of humidity on the integrity of the filter
- Environmental impact - reduced use of materials due to 95% air in frame
- Frame material functions also as a patented seal, 3DUltraSeal
More details:
EPS is used as a framing material in IQAir air filters primarily due to its combination of mechanical, environmental, and practical advantages that align well with the brand's high-performance air purification standards. Here are the key advantages:
1. Lightweight yet Rigid Structure
EPS is made of over 95% air, which makes filters easier to handle during manufacturing, transport, and user replacement. Despite its lightness, it offers sufficient structural rigidity to support the filter media and maintain its shape under airflow pressure.
2. Flexible
EPS can be moulded with high precision, allowing IQAir to create filter frames with tight tolerances, critical for airtight sealing and optimal airflow control. The flexibility of the filter with its build-in sealing groove, allows IQAir's proprietary filter design and sealing mechanism 3D UltraSeal, which ensures true HEPA performance.
3. Environment
EPS minimises the use of fossil fuel in comparison to plastic frames, as Polystyrene contains over 95% air. EPS does not corrode or chemically degrade in the presence of moisture or many chemicals, making it suitable for stable, long-term use in clean air environments. After its useful filter life, IQAir EPA frame filter can easily crushed and compacted. While most true HEPA filters are manufactured with metal, IQAir EPS frame filters can be fully incinerated. Furthermore, IQAir commits to serving a product line for minimum of 25 years to further reduce waste and electronic clutter.
6. Compatibility with Filter Media
Polystyrene is thermally and chemically compatible with HEPA filter media, ensuring long-term stability and adhesion without degrading either material.
